Can you do this cruise port on your own?
San Antonio
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Leave Santiago no later than 2:30pm for a comfortable return.
Tender or Docked?
Ships dock directly at San Antonio. You walk off via gangway and reach transport in a few minutes, but the port sits away from the city center, so you need onward transport immediately.
How to Get Into Town
Shared shuttle to Santiago: 90 min, ~$25-35 USD each way. Shuttles depart from just outside the terminal and are the smoothest option for most cruisers.
Main Attractions
Plaza de Armas, La Moneda, and Cerro San Cristobal cover the core of Santiago. Bellavista adds art, food, and a bohemian feel for those with more time.
How Much Time You Need
8+ hours at the port is the practical minimum for a rewarding Santiago day. Shorter calls are possible if you stay in the city center and pre-arrange transport.
Keep in Mind
The bus does not go to the port. You need a taxi from the San Antonio bus station to the terminal, which adds time and complexity most cruisers don't expect.
Safety & Comfort
Santiago is generally safe for tourists in the central areas, with pickpocketing the main concern in the Metro and around Plaza de Armas.

We took the shared bus to Valparaiso for about $2 each. Spent the whole day wandering the hills and eating empanadas. The port itself is industrial and there's nothing to do there, but Valparaiso more than made up for it. Don't pay for a private transfer - the bus is fine.
Four of us hired a driver to do Casablanca wine valley and then drop us in Valparaiso for the afternoon. About $60 split four ways. The wine tastings were unhurried and the driver knew exactly which wineries had the best terrace views. Getting back to the ship was easy.
