I’d read the tender queue horror stories so we took the very first boat in, did the village and the castle view, and ferried to Santa Margherita by 11. Back on the ship early and relaxed. Early is everything here.

Portofino is stunning but tiny, you’ll photograph it in an hour. The move is to see it early then ferry to Santa Margherita for a proper lunch at half the price. Everyone piling into the village at noon looked stressed.

We tried to reach Cinque Terre and spent the whole day on boats and trains, saw one village in a rush, and nearly missed the last tender. Do not attempt it from here. Wish we’d just enjoyed Portofino.
