Can you do this cruise port on your own?

Easy DIY
Save Hvar for a long call; Split's old town rewards anyone who wanders.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked, right on the waterfront promenade. Ships berth at Obala Kneza Domagoja, and you walk off into the city.
How to Get Into Town
15-minute walk along the waterfront to the Palace gates. Free, flat, and straightforward. The bus station for Trogir is also walkable from the pier.
Main Attractions
Diocletian's Palace is an entire neighborhood, not just a monument. People live, work, and eat inside a 4th-century Roman imperial complex.
How Much Time You Need
4-5 hours is plenty for Split alone. Adding Hvar or Trogir needs a full 9-10 hour call.
Keep in Mind
Hvar catamaran tickets sell out in July and August. If you plan to go to Hvar, book your catamaran the day before (or on the ship before sailing).
Safety & Comfort
Split is safe and well set up for independent visitors. Standard city awareness around crowds is sufficient.

Took the bus to Trogir instead of going to Hvar. 35 minutes, a few euros, almost nobody from my ship was there. Beautiful little town, totally walkable, had a long lunch. Better afternoon than I expected.
Honestly one of the best ports of the whole cruise. We wandered into the Palace with no plan, found a little cafe in a courtyard that used to be part of the imperial quarters or something, had coffee and cheese pastries while pigeons pecked around the ancient columns. No excursion needed at all.
We were told the ship's excursion was the only way to really do Split properly. That turned out not to be true at all. We just walked off the ship and followed the waterfront. The Palace gates are literally right there.
We booked the Hvar catamaran the morning of our port day without pre-booking. Sold out. Had to take the car ferry to Stari Grad which took two hours and we had to turn around almost immediately. It was fine but not what we planned. Book ahead in summer.
The kids loved the underground halls more than anything else we did. They had no idea Roman ruins could be quite that dramatic. Dark, vaulted, a little spooky. Worth the €8 each.
