Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Heraklion
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Go to Knossos first on the morning bus before the midday heat.
Tender or Docked?
Always docked, with a free 5-minute shuttle to the passenger terminal within the port. The city center is a 15-minute walk or short taxi from the terminal exit.
How to Get Into Town
Bus #2 to Knossos: 20-25 min, €1.50-2 each way. The bus stop is a 10-min walk from the passenger terminal, or board near the port exit.
Main Attractions
Knossos Palace and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum are the two-part Minoan story; either one fills half a day, and the two together make one of the richest port days in Greece.
How Much Time You Need
8-10 hours covers Knossos and the museum comfortably. Shorter calls still allow Knossos on its own, but heat makes the midday site visit challenging in summer.
Keep in Mind
Summer heat at Knossos is severe. The site has almost no shade and temperatures regularly reach 35-40 degrees in July and August.
Safety & Comfort
Heraklion is safe and tourist-friendly. The main physical risk is heat at Knossos; the city itself is straightforward to navigate.

Fifth Mediterranean cruise and third time in Heraklion. Still haven't done both Knossos and the museum in one day. This time we just did the museum. No regrets, it's excellent.
My kids were genuinely interested in the Minotaur myths, so Knossos connected for them. The reconstructed sections helped them visualize it. My son was more fascinated by the drainage system than by anything else, which was not what I expected.
We got to Knossos before 9am when the first buses left the port area. The site was almost empty for the first hour. By the time we left around 11am, it was packed and the heat was already noticeable. Worth getting there early.
I spent more time in the Archaeological Museum than I expected. Two hours went by without noticing. If I only had time for one, I'd still do Knossos, but the museum has things you can't really understand from the site alone.
The bus was simpler than I expected. We walked to Bus Station A, bought tickets at the little kiosk, and the bus came in about 10 minutes. 8 euros total for both of us to get there and back. Much cheaper than the ship excursion would have been.
