Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Thessaloniki
DIY Score
Effortless DIY
Walk the flat center first; save the uphill Upper Town for last.
Tender or Docked?
Docked on the central waterfront, no tender. You walk off the gangway and follow the flat seafront promenade into the historic center.
How to Get Into Town
A flat 15-20 minute walk to the center, free. The seafront promenade runs from the port gate to Aristotelous Square, with the White Tower about 30 minutes on.
Main Attractions
The White Tower, the Rotunda, and the Roman Forum, all on foot. Thessaloniki packs Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman layers into one walkable center.
How Much Time You Need
4-5 hours covers the center comfortably. A full day only matters if you add the Upper Town or a drive to Vergina.
Keep in Mind
The Upper Town is a real climb. Everything else is flat, but Ano Poli rewards you only after a steep uphill on cobbles.
Safety & Comfort
Generally safe and easy for first-timers. Normal city awareness in crowds is all most cruisers need.

Climbed up to Ano Poli in the afternoon heat which was a mistake, my legs were gone by the top. But then you turn a corner and the whole city and the gulf open up below you and honestly I forgot about my legs for a bit.
we just walked off and followed the water. Ended up sitting at the White Tower for ages watching people fish. didnt even go in, just liked being off the ship in a normal city for once.
My husband has a bad hip so we skipped the Upper Town completely. The seafront is dead flat and we had a lovely slow morning down by the tower and a museum. Taxi back was six euros.
Half the churches we wanted were shut when we got there, siesta hours I guess. Do check opening times, we wasted a good hour walking to a locked door.
Much easier than most Greek ports. Fifteen, twenty minutes along the front and you're right in the thick of it. No tender, no shuttle, no drama.
