Phu My is an industrial port with nothing walkable and no public transit option to HCMC. A private car is essentially required; the 80 km drive takes 90-120 minutes in reasonable conditions, longer in peak traffic. The port gate exit involves a 10-15 minute shuttle or walk before your driver meets you.

A standard 10-hour call allows about 4-5 usable hours in HCMC after accounting for transit each way. That is enough to see the central historic sights, but the time pressure is real and constant.

Ho Chi Minh City has a well-documented scam environment, including motorbike bag snatching on busy streets, xe om fare inflation, and persistent cyclo overcharging. Grab removes the taxi risk but needs setup. The street traffic is chaotic and crossing requires nerve. Language barrier is moderate in tourist areas.

How this port works

Phu My is a large container and industrial port in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, about 80 km from Ho Chi Minh City. After docking, a terminal shuttle (or 15-20 minute walk) takes you to the main security gate, where pre-booked drivers and transfer vehicles wait. Independent taxis cannot access the port without prior authorization, so ad-hoc taxis at the gate should be treated with caution.

Getting back to the ship

Allow at least 2 full hours before all-aboard for the return from HCMC. Tell your driver your firm departure time from the city before the day begins. HCMC afternoon traffic can push the return to 2.5 hours on bad days; many cruisers set a "leave city by 1 pm" rule for a 4 pm all-aboard.

Common mistakes to avoid

Return timing is the critical variable. HCMC afternoon traffic back to Phu My is unpredictable. Set a firm departure time from the city with your driver and do not let sightseeing overrun it. The standard guideline is to leave HCMC no later than 1:30-2 pm for a 5 pm all-aboard.

Motorbike bag snatching is common in HCMC. Thieves on motorbikes grab bags, phones, and cameras from pedestrians near the curb. Carry bags cross-body on the building side, not the road side, and hold phones discreetly.

Use Grab for all city transport. Street taxis and xe om riders at tourist areas charge inflated fares and sometimes use currency confusion. Grab shows the fare upfront and is the standard safe option.
