We speak a bit of French so the train to Sidi Bou Said was no trouble at all, about a dinar each, and the village is every bit as pretty as the photos. Wandered the blue and white lanes, mint tea with a sea view. Loved it. Would not have wanted to pay tour prices for that.
First taxi driver quoted us a fortune and got shirty when we pushed back. Second one was fine. It's just how it works here, you have to haggle and it wore me down a bit by the afternoon. Sites were great, the hassle less so.
Did Carthage then Sidi Bou Said on the TGM, hopping off at the stops along the line. Trains were crowded and you keep a hand on your bag, but the whole days transport cost us pennies. Back at the port with over an hour to spare.
Honestly we booked a private driver in the end because the language and the taxi stories made us nervous. No regrets, he handled everything and we saw Carthage, the village and the Bardo. More money but zero stress, which for us was worth it here.
didnt fancy the full day into the city so just walked into la goulette, sat at a fish restaurant by the water. not a bad way to spend a few hours if you dont want the faff
