Tender or Docked?
Docked at the North Mole cruise terminal. From the gangway it is a flat, signposted 15-20 minute walk into town, or a short shuttle or taxi.
How to Get Into Town
Flat 15-20 min walk to Casemates Square, free. A shuttle or taxi runs it in a few minutes if you would rather ride.
Main Attractions
The Upper Rock Nature Reserve is the headline: monkeys, caves and tunnels. Down below, Main Street offers duty-free shopping and Casemates Square.
How Much Time You Need
4-5 hours does it comfortably. A taxi tour of the Rock plus a walk down Main Street fits an average call with room to spare.
Keep in Mind
The cable car is closed until late 2027. For a 2026 cruise, reach the summit by a licensed taxi tour or the new Nature Reserve shuttle, not a cable-car ride.
Safety & Comfort
Very safe and about as easy as European ports get. English is the official language and taxis are regulated; the macaques are the main hazard.

Walked into town in about twenty minutes on a flat path, easy as anything. We shared a taxi up the Rock with another couple, forty quid each, and the driver stopped at all the good bits. The monkeys are cheeky, one sat right on the bonnet.
With the cable car shut we tried the new reserve shuttle up to Queen's Balcony, which was a godsend as we'd never have managed the walk. There are still a fair few steps once you're up there mind, at the cave especially. Lovely views over to Africa though.
just did main street and a pint, didnt bother with the rock this time. flat walk, everyone speaks english, felt like a day out in england with better weather
Took the new shuttle up thinking it'd be dead simple, and it was fine in the end, but the queue at Marketplace was longer than we bargained for on a two-ship morning and it only comes every half hour. Beat walking up in that heat though. Don't leave it late.
Off the ship at half nine, we picked the shared taxi tour over the shuttle because we wanted a guide, about two hours, then Main Street and back onboard by two. No stress, everything close together and in English.
Kids were obsessed with the monkeys, obviously. Had to rescue a bag of crisps from one of them. Easy port, we walked back down into town for ice cream after and still made it back with an hour spare.
