A standard 9-10 hour call is ideal for the Colombo city circuit. The Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face Green, Fort district, and Pettah Market can all be visited comfortably without rushing. The National Museum rounds out the day for history enthusiasts.

English is widely spoken in Colombo. The PickMe app removes the main transport friction. The city center is navigable with a phone map. Some streets in Pettah are chaotic but not unsafe; petty scams exist but are less aggressive than at some South Asian ports.

On a call under 7 hours, go directly to Gangaramaya Temple (book PickMe from the gate) and walk or tuk-tuk to Galle Face Green afterward. These two give a strong impression of Colombo without rushing.

Common mistakes to avoid

Download PickMe before going ashore. Street tuk-tuk drivers at the port gate start high on fares for cruise tourists. The PickMe app shows the fare in advance and eliminates negotiation entirely. It takes 5 minutes to set up and works throughout Colombo.

Kandy is not practical on a standard port call. The round trip is 6-8 hours of driving. Kandy is genuinely beautiful, but attempting it on a 10-hour call leaves almost no time at the destination and significant return risk. Do not try Kandy unless you have a 12+ hour call.

Modest dress at Gangaramaya Temple. Shoulders and knees must be covered. Sarongs are available at the entrance for a small fee or tip. Shoes must be removed in temple buildings.

Pettah is crowded and fast-moving. Keep bags in front and be aware of your surroundings. The risk is petty theft in the dense crowd, not any specific threat to safety. Avoid pulling out expensive camera equipment in the most congested lanes.

Currency. Sri Lankan Rupees are needed for most transactions. ATMs are available in the Fort area and near major hotels. Cards are accepted at most hotels and tourist-facing restaurants but not at markets or temples.

Colombo traffic peaks mid-morning and late afternoon. The city is compact enough that this rarely adds more than 15-20 minutes to a journey, but planning return timing from Kandy (if attempted) must account for afternoon gridlock leaving the city.
