Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Alexandria
DIY Score
Keep it simple
Book a trusted private guide, start early, and build a big return buffer.
Tender or Docked?
Docked, but nothing worthwhile is nearby. You clear a working commercial port on foot to a waiting vehicle; the sights are hours inland.
How to Get Into Town
Giza is ~3 hrs each way by private car. There is no simple public route for a cruise day; a booked guide or driver is the realistic option.
Main Attractions
The Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the new Grand Egyptian Museum are the headline. Alexandria's own sights are the calmer alternative.
How Much Time You Need
A Cairo day is all-or-nothing: plan 11-13 hours. Six of those are in the car, so there is no room to add extras.
Keep in Mind
The drive is the whole risk. Three hours each way plus Cairo traffic means your return timing has almost no slack.
Safety & Comfort
Generally safe in daylight, with persistent hassle. Most trouble is overcharging and pressure, not danger.

I will be honest, I watched the clock the entire drive back from Giza. Our private guide was excellent and got us moving early, but Cairo traffic is no joke. We made it with time to spare but my nerves did not.
Thought we could just grab a taxi and train it to Cairo cheap. Big mistake for a cruise day. The station was overwhelming and we cut the return way too close. Would book a proper guide next time.
We skipped Cairo entirely, no regrets. Six hours in a car was not our idea of a holiday. Did the library and the citadel in Alexandria by taxi and had a relaxed, lovely day near the ship.
The first time you come over the rise and the pyramids are just there, bigger than your brain expects, all the driving sort of melts away. Stood there for a while just looking. Then a man tried to sell me a scarf and the moment passed.
Booked a private guide instead of the ship tour and paid about half. Small car, just us, saw more, and he handled all the tickets and the guys trying to sell camel rides. Only downside is nobody waits for you if you are late, so we didn't push it.
