Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Malaga
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Book Alhambra tickets months ahead or plan a full day in Malaga.
Tender or Docked?
Always docked, and close to the city center. Large ships use the Levante terminals, about a 15-20 minute walk from the old town.
How to Get Into Town
Port shuttle to Plaza de la Marina: ~5 min, ~€2-3. Or walk the 15-20 minutes along the harbor promenade.
Main Attractions
The Alhambra is the reason most people come. If that is off the table, Malaga's Alcazaba, Picasso Museum, and cathedral make for a genuinely satisfying half-day.
How Much Time You Need
10+ hours needed for the Alhambra; 5-6 hours is fine for Malaga city. The two are hard to combine in a single day.
Keep in Mind
Alhambra tickets sell out months in advance. If you have not pre-booked before your sailing date, independent access to the Nasrid Palaces is effectively impossible.
Safety & Comfort
Malaga and Granada are safe and easy. Normal city awareness is enough; pickpocket risk is low compared to Barcelona or Madrid.

Third time in Malaga. Skipped the Alhambra again because the ticket situation is absurd if you don't plan ahead. Did the Alcazaba and the Picasso Museum and was back at the ship by 2pm. Fine port for a half-day.
Didn't bother with Granada. Walked to the Alcazaba, which took about 25 minutes from the port, spent a couple of hours exploring, then found a place near the cathedral for lunch. One of the more relaxed cruise days I've had.
We had booked the Alhambra tickets in February for our April cruise. The tickets said 10am entry to the Nasrid Palaces and we made it with about 10 minutes to spare after an early bus from Malaga. Worth every bit of the planning stress. Nothing prepares you for actually standing in there.
My friend and I attempted the climb up to the Alcazaba and had to turn back. The path is steeper than photos suggest and it was warm even in October. We sat at a cafe by Muelle Uno instead, which was actually very nice. Sometimes the plan B turns out fine.
The bus to Granada itself was totally fine. My kids handled it. The Alhambra was gorgeous but honestly overwhelming with two under-10s. We were exhausted by 1pm. Wish we'd done Malaga city instead and saved Granada for a proper holiday.
