Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Kusadasi
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Get to Ephesus early; the heat and crowds both peak by midday.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked, right in Kusadasi town center. Ships berth at Ege Port, steps from the bazaar and waterfront. No tender.
How to Get Into Town
Dolmus to Ephesus: ~30 min, ~100 TRY (~€3) each way. Walk 15 minutes from the pier to Kusadasi's main bus station, then take the shared minibus marked "Selcuk."
Main Attractions
Ephesus is one of the best-preserved ancient Roman cities in the world. The Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, and the marble-paved main street are all in excellent condition.
How Much Time You Need
Allow at least 7-8 hours for an Ephesus visit. That covers the dolmus journey each way, 2.5-3 hours inside the ruins, and a return buffer.
Keep in Mind
Port taxis charge €60-120 round trip to Ephesus while the dolmus costs about €3 each way. The savings are real but require walking to the bus station.
Safety & Comfort
Kusadasi and Ephesus are safe and very tourist-oriented. The main friction points are overpriced taxis and heat, not safety.

The Terrace Houses were the best €15 I spent. Most people skip them because of the extra cost but the mosaics inside are gorgeous up close. I could have spent the whole morning just in there.
We paid 120 euros for a taxi because we panicked at the port gate. Found out on the ship that night that two other couples had taken the dolmus for a couple of euros each. I wasn't even that upset - our driver was great - but I'd do it differently next time.
The kids lasted about 90 minutes before they were done with ancient ruins. We spent the last hour sitting in a little cafe at the Lower Gate eating ice cream while I tried to read the placards I'd missed. Worth it, but manage your expectations if you have young ones.
Got there right at 8am and the site was nearly empty for the first hour. By 10:30 the tour buses had arrived and it was a totally different experience. Those first two hours were incredible. Do not sleep in.
Four Ephesus visits between us was plenty. Stayed in Kusadasi instead, found a fish restaurant on the waterfront, watched ships coming and going from a terrace table. No regrets. The waterfront here is genuinely pleasant on its own.
