Can you do this cruise port on your own?
Katakolon
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Take the 9am train and plan your Olympia return before you leave the ship.
Tender or Docked?
Always docked, right in the center of Katakolon village. The walk from the gangway to the train station is under 10 minutes.
How to Get Into Town
Train from Katakolon to Ancient Olympia: 45 min, €10 round trip. The train station is under 10 minutes' walk from the pier.
Main Attractions
Ancient Olympia is the entire reason to come to Katakolon. The Temple of Zeus, the original Olympic stadium, and the Archaeological Museum fill 2.5-4 hours easily.
How Much Time You Need
Allow 4-5 hours for Ancient Olympia. 90 min of that is the train round trip; you have 2.5-3.5 hours for the site itself on a standard port call.
Keep in Mind
The train does not run on Sundays. If your call is on a Sunday, you need a taxi or organized transfer to reach Olympia.
Safety & Comfort
Katakolon and Olympia are both safe and easy. The main discomfort is heat; the main practical risk is return transport timing.

Our call was a Sunday. Taxi drivers were at the pier immediately, multiple of them, and we negotiated a group rate for 4 people. Came to about €25 each return with a 2-hour wait included. Worth it. Don't panic if you can't take the train.
We got off the ship at 8am and walked to the train station in about 8 minutes. The 9am train left on time and we were at Olympia by 9:45. We did the full site and the museum and caught the 1pm train back. Perfect day. We were the only couple in our group who didn't buy a shore excursion and we paid €10 each vs however much the ship charged.
My kids were actually more interested than I expected. We stood in the stadium and my son ran a lap on the original track. He was very pleased with himself. Museum was a bonus.
