Cagliari
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Rent the car in advance; it opens the island up completely.
Tender or Docked?
Ships dock at Cagliari, within easy reach of the city center. A free port shuttle runs to Piazza Matteotti, or you can walk in about 15-20 minutes.
How to Get Into Town
Free shuttle to Piazza Matteotti (city center hub), 5-10 min. Alternatively, the 15-20 minute walk from the port gate is flat and follows the harbor.
Main Attractions
Cagliari's Castello quarter and Bastione di Saint Remy deliver history and views without a car. A rental car unlocks Sardinia's legendary beaches.
How Much Time You Need
6+ hours works for Cagliari city; 8+ hours is needed to add a beach by rental car. Su Nuraxi and Villasimius each take the better part of the day with transit time.
Keep in Mind
Costa Smeralda is not accessible from Cagliari on a cruise day. It is 230 km north, a 3-hour drive each way. This is a different part of Sardinia.
Safety & Comfort
Cagliari is a safe city with low tourist-crime risk. Standard Italian-city awareness is all that's needed.

We rented a car and drove to Villasimius. The beach at Porto Giunco was genuinely one of the most beautiful places I've seen in my life. The water colour is almost unreal. We'd booked the car weeks before which was lucky because availability was tight in June.
Cagliari catches people off guard because it's actually a real city with a real history, not just a beach gateway. The Castello quarter is better than I expected. Don't rush past it trying to get somewhere else.
