Can I do this cruise port on my own?
Zeebrugge
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Go early and book the shuttle ahead; Bruges gets very crowded by midday.
Tender or Docked?
Ships dock directly at Zeebrugge. A short port-side shuttle takes you from the gangway to the cruise terminal, from which paid shuttles and taxis depart for Bruges.
How to Get Into Town
Private shuttle to Bruges: ~€20-25 return, 25 min. Book ahead online; it drops at Bargeplein, a 15-minute walk from the main Markt square.
Main Attractions
Bruges is a medieval city designed to be explored on foot, with canal views, the iconic Belfry, and excellent independent chocolate makers and craft breweries all within a compact historic center.
How Much Time You Need
5-6 hours in Bruges is the sweet spot for a cruise day. The city is compact enough to cover without rushing, even accounting for the shuttle each way.
Keep in Mind
Bruges is one of Europe's most visited cities, and the cruise ship crowds compound regular tourist pressure. The mornings are noticeably calmer.
Safety & Comfort
Bruges and Zeebrugge are safe and comfortable for independent travelers. Bruges is among the easiest cities in Europe for a first-time visitor to navigate.

tried the tram to blankenberge then train combo and it worked fine, saved about 15 euros per person versus the shuttle. tram was right there, train was fast. only thing is you have to watch the return timetable yourself since nobodys organizing it for you
Four of us went and we were a bit late getting off the ship. By the time we got to Bruges it was nearly noon and the canal boat queue was massive. Lesson learned: go early. The afternoon crowds are something else.
kids loved the canal boat and the chocolate shops, which honestly is enough for them. we skipped the museums entirely and just walked around. stroller was a challenge on the cobblestones but manageable once we were used to it
We booked the Cruise Express shuttle and it was perfectly organized, no complaints at all. The drop-off is about a 15-minute walk from the Markt but it is flat and easy. Bruges was beautiful. We did the canal boat and had lunch by the water. Everything ran smoothly.
Did Bruges twice now, once on a ship excursion and once DIY. The DIY version was better in every way. We moved at our own pace, had a long beer at a brewery, and paid probably a third of what the excursion costs. Book the Belfry online before you go though, we couldn't get in on the day.
