Can I do this cruise port on my own?
Palermo
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Stay in the historic center; Palermo rewards wanderers who do not over-plan.
Tender or Docked?
Ships dock at Palermo's port, a short walk from the city center. No tender, no shuttle needed. The historic center starts about 20 minutes on foot from the gangway.
How to Get Into Town
Walk to Palermo city center: 20-30 min. The historic neighborhoods, cathedrals, and main markets are all within this radius. Bus 389 to Monreale from Piazza Indipendenza takes 40 min for ~€1.50.
Main Attractions
The Cappella Palatina's Byzantine mosaics and the street markets are the defining Palermo experiences; add Monreale's cathedral for the most visually impressive Norman interior in Sicily.
How Much Time You Need
A full 8-9 hour call is well spent covering Palermo's historic center and either the Cappella Palatina or Monreale; both in one day is possible but rushed.
Keep in Mind
Palermo's markets are busy, lively, and require active bag awareness. Keep valuables secured in the Ballarò and Vucciria areas.
Safety & Comfort
Palermo is an active, spirited city. The historic center is safe for daytime visitors; market areas require standard southern Italian street awareness.

We went straight to Ballarò market from the port and it was overwhelming in the best possible way. The noise, the smells, the colours. We spent two hours just wandering and eating things from stalls. Hold your bag tight but don't let that stop you going.
We didn't book the Cappella Palatina in advance and couldn't get in on the day. That was a real shame. The queue was about an hour and we didn't have time. If that's your priority, book it online before you leave home.
Four of us took the bus to Monreale and the cathedral absolutely floored us. Bigger than we expected, the gold mosaics go on forever. The cloister is a separate ticket but worth it. Bus was fine - a bit crowded but only 40 mins and only €1.50 each.
palermo felt chaotic to me at first, the streets are a bit of a maze and its loud and busy. took me 20 mins to get my bearings. but once I stopped trying to navigate efficiently and just wandered, it was brilliant. the four corners piazza alone is something else
We pre-booked the Cappella Palatina and I am glad we did. The room is small and they limit numbers; people outside were queuing in the sun when we walked straight in. The mosaics are genuinely beyond description. One of the great things we have seen in 30 years of cruising.
