Can I do this cruise port on my own?
Naples
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Pompeii, Capri, or Naples city: each one fills the day. Pick one.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked. Ships berth at the Stazione Marittima, with Molo Beverello (Capri ferry pier) immediately adjacent and the city center a 10-minute walk away.
How to Get Into Town
Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii: ~40 min, €3.20. Ferry to Capri: ~50 min, €26.50-28.50. The ferry pier is right at the cruise terminal; the Circumvesuviana requires a short metro hop first.
Main Attractions
Pompeii if you want history, Capri for sea and scenery. Sorrento is the easiest of the main options to slot into a shorter day.
How Much Time You Need
8+ hours for any main destination. A shorter call limits you to Naples city itself or a rushed Herculaneum visit.
Keep in Mind
Pre-book Pompeii tickets and Capri return ferries before you sail. Walk-ups are possible but lines are long and afternoon Capri ferries sell out in summer.
Safety & Comfort
Active awareness needed, particularly on the Circumvesuviana and around Piazza Garibaldi.

We took the Campania Express to Pompeii and it was absolutely worth the €15. Comfortable seats, air con, and we weren't battling for space with day-trippers. Getting to the ruins just felt calmer. Highly recommend vs the regular train.
The Circumvesuviana was an experience... got my phone pickpocketed on the way back from Pompeii. Was careless. Friends who held their bags in front of them were fine. Just be deliberate about it the whole way.
Stayed in Naples for the day since the call was only 8 hours. Best pizza of my life, walked through Spaccanapoli, saw the Castel Nuovo from outside. Completely unpretentious and brilliant.
Capri was spectacular but we nearly missed the last ferry we'd planned to take. The afternoon ones were packed out and we had to scramble for an earlier boat. Pre book both legs before you leave the house. We got lucky.
Pompeii with small children is a long, hot day. We underestimated how much uneven ground there was and how exposed the site is. Worth it for the older ones; the 5-year-old was done after an hour.
We chose Herculaneum instead of Pompeii and dont regret it. Less walking, less sun, far fewer people. The preservation is incredible and you can actually look at things without being swept along in a crowd.
