Can I do this cruise port on my own?
Messina
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Know your return train before you leave the ship; the two-hour gap is unforgiving.
Tender or Docked?
Ships dock directly at Messina's Stazione Marittima terminal. The city center is a 5-minute walk and the train station for Taormina is 10 minutes on foot.
How to Get Into Town
Train from Messina Centrale to Taormina-Giardini: ~57 min, ~€6-8 each way. Then a local bus (~20-30 min, ~€1.50) or taxi up to Taormina hilltop. Total door-to-door: about 1h30 each way.
Main Attractions
The Ancient Greek Theatre with its view of Etna is Taormina's unmissable sight, and the Corso Umberto from Porta Messina to Porta Catania rewards a full two-hour wander.
How Much Time You Need
Allow 4-5 hours in Taormina for a full visit including the theatre, the Corso, and a cable car descent. The 1h30 journey each way sets the minimum port call needed.
Keep in Mind
Trains to Taormina run only every 2 hours, and Sunday service is nearly non-existent. Know the timetable before you leave the ship.
Safety & Comfort
Messina and Taormina are safe and comfortable for independent visitors; standard Italian awareness applies in busy tourist areas.

We took the 9am train, arrived at Giardini, got the bus up. The theatre was open, the view over Etna was something we still talk about. We were back on the Messina train by 2:30 with everything done. Smooth trip. Just know your return train time before you go and it all works.
missed the 10am train because we stopped for breakfast. waited two hours at messina centrale. in the end we had barely 2 hours in taormina. should have checked the schedule properly. not a disaster but not what we planned
The view from the theatre terrace across to Etna was one of those moments you don't forget. Book tickets in advance, we nearly couldn't get in on the day. The whole town is steep but beautiful. Wear proper shoes, not sandals.
Our call was on a Sunday. Nobody warned us about the Sunday train situation. We ended up having to share a taxi with two other couples from our ship which cost about €25 each return. Actually not bad in the end. But we should have known in advance.
I skipped the theatre and just walked the Corso for a couple hours, had the best arancino of my life at a little shop near Porta Messina, and took the cable car down to swim at Mazzaro. Genuinely one of my favourite port days. You don't have to tick every box.
