Can I do this cruise port on my own?
Marghera (Venice)
DIY Score
Doable with planning
The Marghera transfer adds an hour each way; build it in from the start.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked, but at an industrial port 10 km from Venice. A free cruise line shuttle gets you to Stazione Marittima, then you make your own way to the city by vaporetto.
How to Get Into Town
Three steps to San Marco: free shuttle, People Mover (~€1.50), then vaporetto (~€9.50, 30-40 min). Total about 60-70 minutes each way.
Main Attractions
Piazza San Marco anchors the day; the Doge's Palace adds history and the Grand Canal rewards just wandering. Venice is compact enough that the city itself is the attraction.
How Much Time You Need
9+ hours in port minimum. The 60-70 min transit each way means a shorter call leaves limited time in the city.
Keep in Mind
Read the shuttle instructions onboard the night before. Some cruise lines distribute timed shuttle tickets; without one, you may wait for a later bus.
Safety & Comfort
Venice is very safe; the main concern is pickpockets on crowded vaporetti and in Piazza San Marco.

Nobody on our ship seemed to know what was happening in Marghera. We just followed the crowd onto the shuttle and it worked out fine. But I wish I had read up beforehand. The three-step process is very doable, just unexpected if you were expecting to walk off into Venice.
Got a vaporetto day pass which made everything easy. We went to Murano on the way back to Piazzale Roma instead of rushing straight back. 15 minutes on the water and a completely different atmosphere. Highly recommend adding it if your call runs to 10+ hours.
Spent most of the day just wandering away from San Marco. The back streets of Castello and Dorsoduro are so quiet compared to the tourist crush. You genuinely feel like you have the city to yourself 10 minutes walk from the piazza.
The access fee thing caught us by surprise. We had to pay €10 each at the entrance because we hadn't registered in advance. Not a huge amount but annoying. Register on cda.ve.it before you sail on any date April-July.
Beautiful day but the bridges were a lot. Every street has at least one or two and some of the steps are quite steep. We loved it but my knees were done by 3pm. Worth it completely but go in with realistic expectations if walking is difficult.
