Can I do this cruise port on my own?
Livorno
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Decide before you dock: Florence is rewarding but Pisa is easier on limited time.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked. Livorno is a large industrial port; ships berth directly, but the port has no tourist facilities at the terminal.
How to Get Into Town
Train to Florence: ~80 min, ~€10-11 each way. Train to Pisa: ~15 min, ~€3-4. Getting to the station first requires a short bus, taxi, or walk from the port.
Main Attractions
Florence for iconic art and history, Pisa for the famous tower. Lucca is the quieter third option for anyone who prefers a calm Tuscan day.
How Much Time You Need
Florence needs a full 8+ hour call; Pisa works with 6 hours. The 80-minute train each way to Florence is the main constraint.
Keep in Mind
The free cruise shuttle goes to the city center, not the train station. Build in the extra transfer step.
Safety & Comfort
Florence is safe for independent tourists; active attention needed at the main station and busy sight queues.

We did Pisa and it was perfect for our 9-hour call. Tower was booked months ahead, train was 15 minutes, and we had a long lunch in the old town. Back at the ship by 4pm with no stress. Would do it the same way again.
Check the sciopero dates! We had a near-miss with a rail strike and had to scramble for a taxi back. All fine in the end but stressful. We keep a strike calendar bookmarked now for every Italy port.
Florence was incredible but the day was very rushed. We had about 5 hours in the city after all the trains. Next time I'd probably book the Uffizi first thing and skip trying to see multiple things.
Lucca was a revelation. Cycled the walls, had a long lunch, wandered around. It felt calm and local compared with Florence. If you've already done Florence from a previous cruise, Lucca is 100% worth it.
We made the mistake of taking the cruise shuttle to the city center, expecting it to be near the station. It wasnt. Budget extra time for that bit. Fine once we figured it out but cost us 25 minutes.
