Can I do this cruise port on my own?
La Spezia
DIY Score
Easy DIY
Check your last comfortable train home; evening services fill fast.
Tender or Docked?
Ships dock inside La Spezia's commercial port. A free shuttle carries passengers to the terminal gate; the train station for Cinque Terre is a 25-minute walk or a short taxi from there.
How to Get Into Town
Train from La Spezia Centrale to Riomaggiore: 9 min, included in the Cinque Terre Card (€5-10 for 1 day). Buy the card online in advance to skip the ticket office queue at the station.
Main Attractions
Hop the train between the five clifftop villages, each with its own harbor, colored houses, and hiking connections. Vernazza and Riomaggiore are the most visited; Monterosso has the only real beach.
How Much Time You Need
8+ hours in port covers two or three villages comfortably. A short call can work with just Riomaggiore and Via dell'Amore and still feel worthwhile.
Keep in Mind
Most of the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Path) is still closed. Check which sections are open before you plan a hiking-focused day.
Safety & Comfort
La Spezia and Cinque Terre are safe and easy to navigate independently; the main hazard is the physical terrain and the train crowds in summer.

My husband uses a walking stick and we were a bit worried about the villages but Monterosso was absolutely fine. The flat seafront there is lovely and we had a long lunch and a paddle. We didn't even try the other villages and had a wonderful time.
We did Riomaggiore, Via dell'Amore, and Vernazza and that felt like a perfect day. Vernazza harbor around 9:30am was genuinely lovely before the crowds arrived. By the time we left at noon it was heaving. The card was amazing value, I couldn't believe how cheap it was.
Honestly the train itself is part of the fun for the kids. We did three villages and spent most of the time at the little harbor in Manarola. Kids wanted to jump in. Didn't manage the Via dell'Amore because we arrived too late - go early if that's your priority.
Did the Monterosso to Vernazza hike. It's properly hard! Steep paths, full sun in July, took us nearly 2 hours. The panoramic coast views were something else entirely. But be honest with yourself about fitness level. We were exhausted by the end and desperately glad there was a train back.
bought the card at the station without realising you could get it online. queue was 35 mins. lesson learned. once we were on the train it was all great though, hopping between villages is so easy
