Can I do this cruise port on my own?
Genoa
DIY Score
Doable with planning
Pick Portofino or Genoa; the train-and-ferry each way takes a full hour.
Tender or Docked?
Ships dock at Ponte dei Mille or Ponte Andrea Doria, both within a short walk of the Porto Antico (Old Port). No tender. Genoa city center is 12-20 minutes on foot from the gangway.
How to Get Into Town
Train from Genoa Piazza Principe to Santa Margherita Ligure: ~50 min, ~€4.50. Then a 15-minute ferry to Portofino (~€9). Total door-to-door: about 1 hour each way.
Main Attractions
Portofino's pastel harbor is the image everyone comes for, and the village itself takes about two hours to explore properly; Genoa's UNESCO medieval city is a strong alternative for those who prefer a proper city day.
How Much Time You Need
2 hours in Portofino itself is plenty. Allow a full hour each way for the journey and you need 4-5 hours minimum from the ship for a worthwhile Portofino day.
Keep in Mind
There is no direct road to Portofino. Every route involves a ferry or a boat; if the sea is rough, your options narrow.
Safety & Comfort
Genoa and the Riviera coast are safe and comfortable for independent travelers; standard Italian city awareness applies in Genoa's busier areas.

We did the train to Santa Margherita and the ferry across. The ferry is only about 15 minutes and the approach to Portofino harbour by water is stunningly photogenic. We had 2 hours in the village, which was perfect. The piazzetta, the church on the hill, a walk toward the lighthouse. Done.
the ferry ride is the kids' highlight every time. they loved spotting the village from the water. worth the journey just for the arrival.
We tried to do both Genoa and Portofino in one day. Rushed, honestly. We saw neither properly. If we go back we'll pick one and give it the full day it deserves. Lesson learned about trying to pack too much in.
stayed in genoa and it was brilliant. the caruggi are this mad medieval maze of lanes and every corner has a different thing, pesto shop, chapel, courtyard. way more interesting than i expected. not a typical tourist experience, it's a real italian city
portofino is tiny. gorgeous, obviously gorgeous. but four of us covered every street in about an hour and a half. the walk up to the church gave us the best photos of the trip. then we sat in santa margherita for lunch on the way back which was much cheaper and just as nice
