Can I do this cruise port on my own?
Catania
DIY Score
Keep it simple
Catch the early bus and pre-book crater access before your cruise.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked at Pier 25. Walk off the gangway and you are about 1.3 km from Catania's historic center, a flat 15-20 minute walk.
How to Get Into Town
Walk to Catania's center in 15-20 minutes, free. Reaching Mount Etna requires the AST bus from Piazza Giovanni XXIII (near the central station) or a private transfer.
Main Attractions
The volcano is the main event. From a cable car ride to 2,500 m with self-guided lava walks, to a licensed-guide hike to the active summit craters at 2,900 m, Etna gives you as much or as little as you're prepared for.
How Much Time You Need
8-9 hours minimum for an Etna trip. The AST bus schedule is fixed: you catch the 8:15 am departure and the 16:30 return. A shorter port call is better suited to Catania city or Taormina.
Keep in Mind
The only public bus to Etna leaves at 8:15 am. Miss it and your only option to the volcano is a €80-100 taxi each way.
Safety & Comfort
Catania is safe for independent visitors with standard urban awareness. Etna access is regulated and guided zones are well-managed.

My knees aren't up to Etna so I stayed in Catania while my daughter went. Spent the morning at the fish market and then sat with a coffee in the piazza watching the city go by. A completely pleasant morning without ever going near a volcano.
I was at the bus stop by 8:25 and the bus was already gone. Ended up taking a taxi for €90 which hurt but I got there fine. By the time I arrived around 10am the cable car queue was already building. Lesson learned the hard way on the departure time.
The kids made it to 2,500 m and were fascinated by the lava fields. We hadn't pre-booked the upper crater guide and the afternoon slot was already sold out by the time we arrived, so we just explored the lower area on foot. Still pretty spectacular. The boys kept picking up lava pieces until we made them put everything back.
We did the upper crater guided hike and had booked the guide slot about three months before the cruise, which turned out to be just as well. Our preferred morning time was nearly full. The hike itself was unlike anything I'd done before but the cold surprised us both, even in July. My husband had packed a light jacket "just in case" and we ended up sharing it at the top.
We skipped Etna after reading that the bus timing would be stressful given our 6pm all-aboard. Took the train to Taormina instead. Cheap, easy, left whenever we wanted. The Greek theater was genuinely impressive and the views over the sea were worth it.
