Can I do this cruise port on my own?
Bari
DIY Score
Keep it simple
Pick one destination, and check return bus times before leaving the ship.
Tender or Docked?
Usually docked, close to the old town. Walk off the ship and you are about 15 minutes on foot from Bari Vecchia.
How to Get Into Town
Bari Vecchia is a 10-15 minute walk from the port gate, free. For Alberobello or Matera, you need a bus from the area around Bari Centrale station, about 15 minutes on foot from the port.
Main Attractions
Alberobello's trulli or Matera's cave city. These two UNESCO sites sit in opposite directions from Bari and are each about an hour away. Pick one; the day is not long enough for both.
How Much Time You Need
8+ hours recommended for Alberobello or Matera. Both need about 1 hour each way plus at least 2.5-3 hours on the ground to feel worth the trip.
Keep in Mind
You cannot do both Alberobello and Matera in one cruise day. Each is roughly 1 hour from Bari, and together they would require 4 hours of transit.
Safety & Comfort
Bari is safe and manageable for independent visitors. Normal city awareness applies, particularly in the busy train station area.

Third cruise calling at Bari and finally did Matera properly instead of staying in town. The bus was easy to find once we knew where to look (opposite side of the station from the main entrance, ask anyone). Just wish we'd had another hour there.
I tried to do both. Got to Alberobello by 10, had about 90 minutes there, then bussed back to Bari and took another bus to Matera. Arrived around 2:30pm and the ship was back by 7pm. I ran through Matera in a panic, didn't really see it. If I'm honest it was a waste for both places. Should have just picked one.
Matera was incredible but the stairs were brutal with the kids. My son counted about 400 steps across the sassi area. By midday they were completely done. The views from the top of the ravine were spectacular and worth it, but I wouldn't bring anyone under 8 or anyone with sore knees.
We did Alberobello and it was worth the bus ride. The trulli are genuinely strange and beautiful in person. We arrived around 11am and the main street (Rione Monti) was already packed. Found the side streets in Aia Piccola almost empty though and it was just as good. Didn't rush, had lunch, caught the 3pm bus back. Comfortable.
My friend and I decided against the bus and just stayed in Bari. The old town was much more than I expected. Watched a woman making pasta from her doorstep for about twenty minutes. We found a little fish restaurant, had a long lunch, walked along the seafront. A genuinely lovely day.
